Space Jam!

Finally getting around to posting about Nathan’s last birthday party and I have to say, this one was my favorite! I’ll be honest, the pressure was on and I had no clue what to do to entertain the kids till the Monday before the party. Luckily inspiration hit thanks to ‘dizzy bat’. Check out the decorations, the food ideas, games and more for great ideas to hopefully spur on ideas for your own Space Jam themed party!

Decorations

Balloon arches- don’t be intimidated, they are way easier than they look! The backdrop is inexpensive and is perfect to pull the theme together. And while we were hoping to find a cut out of Michael Jordan, we settled for LeBron James. (They had Bugs and other characters as an option too) All of my links for the balloons, backdrop etc. are listed only on my shopping list at the end of page!

Games

Once my creativity started churning I had so much fun coming up with these games to play with the kids! I gathered them all together and told them that they were the Toon Squad in Training and they had to pass these events in order to play in the big game against the Monstars (from the original movie with MJ).

  1. The Bunny Bounce Race. Grab two pillow cases and have a sack race! We did boys vs girls (Bugs vs Lola)

  2. The Road Runner Race. The kids all lined up and raced. I used a long piece of orange streamer for the kids to run through as the finish line.

  3. The Tweety Bird Toss. I drew a few tweety bird faces on yellow water balloons. (yellow water balloons would work fine) and the kids grabbed a partner and tossed the balloon back and forth. The greatest distance between them before tweety popped won.

  4. Tasmanian Dizzy Bat. Just your typical dizzzy bat relay race!

  5. Elmer Fudd Firing Range. Kids got a chance to knock down a tower of cups with a nerf gun. Best shot won!

  6. Yosemite Sam Rock Paper Scissors Shoot off. Split the kids into two teams, put roughly 6 hula hoops between them. They have to try to get to the other side by passing through the hula hoops - when they meet their opponent, they have to rock paper scissors shoot. If they lose, they run back to their side and the next teammate tries to stop the opponent. If they win, the continue to try to get to the other side.

We also had some things for younger siblings like “Marvin the Martian Moon Sand” and the “Baby Moon Bounce”

After the activities, I had the dads dress up as the Monstars to play against the kids. (yes, somehow I convinced 4 grown men to put on unitards!) It was an absolute blast and probably my son’s favorite part (of course I had the Space Jam song playing during the game). To create the monsters, I purchased full body unitards, cut and painted black t-shirts and printed out the character faces. After the game, food and cupcakes, we watched the new Space Jam movie outside around a fire pit. And after the struggle of getting the movie to actually play both picture and sound - it was the perfect way to end a spectacular birthday party!
